Airshow

On August 24th, the Waterloo Airport hosted an airshow so we had friends out to the farm for a viewing party. Note, the farm is just north of the airport and therefore, it gave us great seats for minimal cost, less traffic, and some room for the kids to roam. It was my first airshow and I was REALLY impressed.....

North Cedar Neighbors Night Out

When we moved to Northeast Minneapolis in 2005, we experienced our first Neighbors Night Out and participated in the event every year we lived in the area.

Since we've moved to North Cedar eighteen years ago, we've been involved in the North Cedar Neighborhood Association and introducing a Neighbors Night Out in our new neighborhood made complete sense.

J took on the bulk of the work planning the event, but like always it takes a village. Thanks to everyone that got involved and participated!

We think we had 80 people in attendance > a complete success with new memberships and donations coming in, friendships being made, and multiple generations interacting together!

We can't wait for next year....

Shout out to Clint Fuller for his graphic design skills.

Kindergarten

On August 14th, Lillian started Kindergarten at North Cedar Elementary. Her classroom is the same classroom that Jason attended Kindergarten in and her teacher is Mrs. Armstrong.

So far, so good.

It's been A LOT of fun listening to her new adventures every day and I'm honestly impressed with all that she's been doing/learning already. We're looking forward to a great year!

Vail 2014

Just like we did two years ago, we recently spent a week in Colorado with my extended family.

We took the gondola up Vail Mountain.....

Sister Whitney, Brother-in-Law Derek, and niece Sloane
Edith refused to look at the camera 2 years ago; this day she was only interested "Funny Faces"

Our girls faced some fears > Lillian did a ropes course and Edith rode a pony.

Cousins

Also, my Grandma and Brother-in-law zip lined....

The whole family spent an afternoon on Lake Dillion via a rented a pontoon boat .....

Team Mehmen rented a Polaris side-by-side and tore up the of side of a mountain near Minturn....

We spent some time in Vail Village.....

Also, we took a day trip to Breckenridge where we took their gondola up the mountain....

The Alpine Side at the top of the mountain was a HUGE hit...

Once again, we had a FANTASTIC time in Colorado.....thanks to our extended family for making it happen!

July 4th

Last year we invited a few friends to the Oasis at Mehmen Farms at the last minute to shoot off $250 worth of fireworks on the 4th....and then we decided we'd make it a tradition.

This year we actually planned a weekend camping trip AND most importantly, took a collection for the purchase of said fireworks. A few of us headed out on Thursday to begin the weekend and on Friday more friends rolled in throughout the day. All in all, we had two campers and a total of 12 tents. We also had $1200 worth of fireworks!

The Oasis is a spot that J has been playing in since he was a kid and as he got older, he started having parties in it. Now our nephew Austin is having parties in it, but I'm confident we put him to shame on this weekend. We took down four rows of corn to get back in there and J spent a lot of time grooming the grounds, but it was totally worth it.

We had four bean bag boards, two disc golf baskets, croquet, bocce ball, a variety of kids games, a kiddie pool, and more food than we could eat. It took a village to make it happen, but the village had FUN!  There's already been talk about next year.

Sturgis Falls

The last weekend in June is Sturgis Falls > Cedar Falls' summer celebration. I've been going to it with J since we met in 1998....we'd make a point of attending even when we lived in other states.

Sturgis Falls is a typical summer celebration with live music, carnival rides/games, a parade, a road race, food trucks, a car show,  etc. Unfortunately the weather was not the best this year with rain washing out most of the events. We did manage to take the girls to see some live music on Thursday and Friday nights. We also went to the carnival to ride some rides and play carnival games. And of course, we didn't miss the parade.

J cut his hair into a mohawk for the weekend

Watching the parade with friends

$4 strawberry smoothies, corn dogs, $5 carnival games, and a few craft beers for the parents add up quick, but it's a tradition that we started sixteen years ago.

Back to Minneapolis

My brother moved out of the Minneapolis house at the beginning of June so we're back to making trips up to mow the yard, check on the house, etc. We decided to take the whole family of four in June and as we were packing, we realized it was the girls first trip back since they moved to Iowa in early spring 2013. We only have a single couch and a few rugs up there so we packed the blow up mattress...making an indoor camping trip out of the weekend. In between household chores, we tried to make a fun weekend out of the trip for the girls. We visited many of their favorite spots.....their old daycare, three different parks, and the neighborhood bakery. We also hit up some our favorite restaurants....

Donuts from Sarah Jane's Bakery....

The neighborhood kiddie pool was the highlight of the trip for the girls as CF doesn't have these anymore for some reason. To me, the girls literally  grew up in this pool and I have many, many memories inside this park. It was our go-to park during my maternity leave with Edith and I bet we've walked to it hundreds of times.

Lunch at Brasa.....Mama's favorite!

I'll be honest and admit that the trip was emotional for me. That house obviously contains A LOT of memories for me...it's where my girls came home from the hospital after they were born and where they learned to crawl, walk, ride their bikes, etc. They have many memories of it....and yet, not many at all. All weekend long I found myself saying, "Do you remember ?". Sometimes they did remember and sadly, sometimes they did not. Although I found myself shedding a tear or two, I'm REALLY glad we made a weekend out of it together!
